Rum, Sun and Fun [The Top 6 Rum Experiences in Barbados]

1/ Mount Gay Rum Tour and Tasting

The rum that invented rum, Mount Gay Rum, is the oldest rum brand in the world! Discover the historical origins of this local favourite! Journey through time as you learn about distillation, ageing and blending techniques that have been perfected over 300 years. Find out why the red Mount Gay caps are so rare and not available for purchase in their beautiful gift store.

The signature rum tasting tour is just $20 USD. There are many other tours to choose from like the cocktail workshop or food pairing sessions. For more visit Mount Gay Rum.

2/ The Rum Bus

Hop on an open-air bus (historically used in Barbados) and tour the island making stops at local ‘rum shops’ along the way. The 4-hour Bus Bar Crawl is $55 USD / person or you can privately charter the whole bus for $125 US/ hour (minimum of 4 hours) and create a route of your own. We recommend choosing a rum shop in Bathsheba, near Bottom Bay and along the West Coast at sunset time for the most scenic route. Be warned when you order a rum and coke in a Bajan rum shop, you get a flask of rum, a bottle of coke and a bucket of ice, no such thing as single served drinks, so bring your friends along for the fun!

3/ The Foursquare Rum Distillery

The award-winning Foursquare Rum Distillery is known for rums like Doorly’s, Old Brigand and E.S.A. Field. The distillery is located on 8 acres of a former sugar plantation in St. Phillip. Explore the distillery on your own self-guided tour. Just follow the guided footprints on the factory floor and they will take you through the various stages of rum-making. Venture outside to the Heritage Park to explore the historic buildings and colonial architecture. There is a folk museum and old sugar plantation equipment that you are also welcome to explore. The self-guided tours are all FREE. Be sure to sample or purchase your rum from the shop, it is some of Barbados’ finest!

Walk the plank or use the rope swing to swing into the warm turquoise ocean. Best of all serve yourself Bajan rum punch from wooden barrels.
